3 Causes Of Water Leaking From Your Air Conditioning System

A failing AC can increase your home's temperature, leading to excessive sweating, heat cramps, and respiratory problems. That's why you must act quickly by hiring an AC contractor as soon as you notice signs of a malfunctioning unit. One issue most people assume is normal and tend to overlook is a leak in the system. But ignoring this issue could lead to complications such as mold growth, electrical shock, and a short lifespan of their cooling unit. However, there are three main causes of leaks in your cooling unit.

1. The Filters Are Dirty

The air filters play an important role in the AC since they filter out any contaminants and dirt from the air before it gets into other parts of the system. Cleaning the dirt ensures that no contaminants get into the AC system, increasing the life and performance of your AC.

Due to their role, filters must be changed regularly, or they will accumulate too much dirt, break, and settle on the coil. Consequently, the air around the coil will freeze up and form ice. When this ice melts, the water drips and causes a leak.

2. Clogged Condensate Line

Most people are unaware that besides reducing the heat in your home, the cooling system also reduces the humidity levels. It achieves this by pushing the moist air to the evaporator coils containing a refrigerant that condenses the moisture. This moisture then flows into the condensate pan and is drained out of the machine through the drain line. But the moisture has dirt and debris, which can accumulate on the drain line to cause blockages. If this happens, the moisture will not be drained but will instead back up or overflow into the AC, causing leaks.

3. Damaged Drain Pan

The purpose of the drain pan in the cooling system is to catch water from the system and pass it through the drain line. However, water will start leaking if the drain pan is damaged or rusted. Such drain pan damage can be due to corrosion or cracks in the system. Most people assume they can block the hole, but without the proper skill and tools, the problem will recur shortly. That is why you need to hire professionals to fix the damaged drain pan.

Water leaking in your AC could be due to dirty filters, a clogged condensate line, and a damaged drain pan. However, without proper training, you might be unable to identify the root cause of the problem. That is why you need to hire an AC contractor to come equipped with the necessary tools to examine the cause of the leak. With this, they will know the best way to solve the problem.
